AI Use Policy
How we use artificial intelligence in our practice, and what we don't do

As a practice with a particular focus on privacy, AI and technology law, we think you should be able to see exactly how we use AI ourselves. This policy sets out our approach plainly and should be read alongside our Privacy Policy and Privacy Collection Notice.
1. Our approach
We use AI tools in limited, considered ways to make our practice more efficient, never to replace a solicitor's judgment. Every piece of advice you receive from us is the product of human legal reasoning, and any AI-assisted material is reviewed and adopted (or discarded) by a solicitor before it goes anywhere near your matter.
2. The AI tools we use
— Meeting transcription and note-taking: we use Plaud to help us accurately capture instructions and discussion during calls and meetings, so that nothing is lost to memory or handwriting
— AI-assisted drafting and research support: used as a starting point for certain documents or research, always reviewed, verified and finalised by a solicitor
— Standard productivity tools with embedded AI features (for example, within Microsoft 365), used under the same oversight as above
3. What we don't do
— We do not enter your personal or matter information into publicly available, free or consumer-tier generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini)
— We do not allow AI tools to make autonomous decisions about your matter
— We do not use your information to train external AI models
— We do not treat AI output as fact: it is checked, verified and taken responsibility for by a solicitor before you see it
4. Telling you when AI is in use
If we intend to record or transcribe a call or meeting with you using an AI tool, we will let you know beforehand, and you may ask that it not be used for that conversation.
5. A note on material you send us
We ask the same care of you that we apply ourselves. Please don't upload our correspondence, or any material relating to your matter, to publicly available AI tools, doing so can risk the confidentiality of your information and, in some circumstances, waiver of legal professional privilege. The AI notice included in our email correspondence sets this out in full.
6. Security and access
Where an AI tool has access to client information, we use business or enterprise-tier products with appropriate confidentiality and data-handling terms, and we keep the tools we use, and their settings, under periodic review.
7. Keeping this policy current
AI tools and the regulatory guidance around them, including from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, continue to develop quickly. We review this policy regularly and will update it as our practices, or the tools we use, change.
